Spring Refurb Still Needs Lighting Expert

Spring Refurb Still Needs Lighting Expert

When you decide in the spring time to decorate and refurbish your home, it can be easy to overlook the fact that for 6 months of the year we are winding down to the shortest day and winding back out again to the longest.  There […]

Smart Meters Enabling Us to Save Power Useage

Smart Meters Enabling Us to Save Power Useage

The government is begging us all to take a new smart meter from our energy suppliers.   The point about the saturation advertising is to highlight that if we have a smart meter, we will willingly check it constantly and panic at the readings and thus cut down entirely our domestic power consumption.  The tag line is speedily mentioned that savings quoted are only achievable with a smart meter if the family reads it regularly and literally makes the manual changes themselves by turning the thermostat down a point or two, permanently and runs the bath water less – suggesting a shower is more planet friendly and uses far less water and power.  The constant mention of saving, making do and mending and looking after things better.   These should have been the planet’s tag line from the very first, as soon as domestic power was introduced.  It’s sadly rather late now.

Mariners’ Lamps Shed Light On Cottage History

Mariners’ Lamps Shed Light On Cottage History

I’ve been buddies with a lady in the next village for a few years now – we help each other when it comes to fetes and fund raising extravaganzas that we get roped in to on a regular basis.  It came as a real shock […]

Check Cable Entry Position When Replacing Lanterns

Check Cable Entry Position When Replacing Lanterns

When the houses on my estate were built nearly twenty years ago, we were all provided with outdoor lights at the front of the house either side of the up & over garage doors – rather amusingly they’re called carriage lanterns.    Well inevitably after a […]

Dad’s Bonfire Night Lighting Display

Dad’s Bonfire Night Lighting Display

Ah that time is coming round again – bonfire night.  It used to be such a big thing in my childhood.  I probably fel more attachment to it because my birthday falls within a short period of the big day and somehow any party activity associated with my birthday had to include the costs of bonfire night and fireworks.   The sparklers were always popular and Dad would string some sort of lighting along the back fence, over the box hedging and back round to the shed.  I can’t imagine they were waterproof safety lights.  In fact, it’s probably a good job none of us were aware of any safety considerations as we are today – we’d have had no fun whatsoever!  I’m sure Dad must have made provision for us not being electrocuted during his 1 hours annual display.   We have all kinds of outside lighting schemes available today – all have to be safety checked and installed by a qualified electrician.  Probably just as well!

Taking Chances With Lighting Is Fools Game

Taking Chances With Lighting Is Fools Game

One of the fab things about getting to autumn is seeing the countryside in a new light.  We have had a truly monumental summer period – amazing sunshine and blistering heat for weeks on end.  I personally don’t remember anything like it ever before and […]

Getting Advice On Exterior Lighting Factors

Getting Advice On Exterior Lighting Factors

Some of the neighbouring houses here have changed hands and a new crop of busy familes have taken over.  The gardens have matured over the years and trees, shrubs etc. have altered the landscape.   This is now when it is a good idea to […]

Footman’s Lighting A Long Forgotten Woe

Footman’s Lighting A Long Forgotten Woe

I have been fascinated by historic houses for many years.   There is one thing though that never escapes me, whether I’m accompanied or not – the lighting in these heritage properties.  I have been helping out at a local place that has reently opened up the basement area of the great pile.  This is to show the daily life of some of the servants that kept the place going through generations and generations.  Down in the butler’s pantry there are several service rooms on from his rather unlikely comfort.  The washroom/laundry is grim as is the 3rd footman’s duty room.  Very little light came in naturally through the ceiling height narrow windows.  Although electric lighting was introduced in the 1920s to replace the very dangerous candle and tallow lighting, the examples hanging up now just go to show how we take decent lighting for granted .  We rarely give it a thought even.

Home Lighting Needs To Lift The Mood & Make Good

Home Lighting Needs To Lift The Mood & Make Good

We live in a small township, in fact our houses are the last of the big executive detached style from the early 2000s before the need to downsize became the bye word in house building.  The town houses of today are generally much narrower and […]
